Elder Alfred Kyungu (Oct. '21): "To Be a Follower of Christ"

Elder Kyungu goes over several traits of the Savior.  Each of these sections contains insights, scriptures, and recent prophetic direction.  There is a pattern to this talk-- a pattern that any of us would do well to follow in our study of gospel topics.

The Activity:

  1. Read par. 5 "To be a . . .  of Jesus Christ."
  2. Point out the idea that to be a disciple means acquiring virtues-- the virtues of Christ.  This activity is designed to help us think about how we might change our behavior to acquire some of these virtues.
  3. Divide the class into four groups and give each group a piece of paper and something to write with.
  4. Assign each group one of the 4 qualities of Christ that Elder Kyungu talks about:
    1. Humility-- par. 7-12 "The first quality . . . humbly with Him."
    2. Courage-- par. 13-19 "The second quality . . . responsibilities and positions."
    3. Forgiveness-- par. 20-24 "The third quality . . . of Jesus Christ."
    4. Sacrifice-- par. 25-28 "The fourth quality . . . with the Savior."
  5. Ask the groups to do the following with their section of the talk:
    1. Draw a line down the middle of their paper
    2. Read aloud their assigned section
    3. On one side of the paper, write down how Christ embodied their assigned quality
    4. On the other side of the paper, write down ways in which a person might try to emulate the Savior in regards to this virtue.
  6. After groups have had time to complete the activity, come back together and ask one person from each group to share the work their group did.

Using the Activity:

This is an activity that is designed to help the class members not simply liken the words of the talk to their own lives, but also to dig deeply into the exact words that are used in the talk.  Such close reading of a talk is very valuable but also something that can be taxing at times.  So, we probably don't do it as often as we should (or at least I don't-- I hope that I'm not alone in that).

Thank you for visiting my page.  I hope that it proves helpful to you in your teaching efforts.  God bless.
