Pres. Steven J. Lund (Oct. '22): "Lasting Discipleship"

 I think Pres. Lund is the type of president I would like to have over my organization-- enthusiastic, energetic, uses long, interesting words (so, maybe a little nerdy 😁), loving, and focused on the gospel.  His love of the youth and of the gospel really was on display during this talk.  

The Activity:

  1. Ask Pres. Lund's question from par. 16 ("How can loving . . . into lasting discipleship?").  In other words, what are the things we can do to move ourselves from the beginning of this process towards the other end?
  2. Invite the class members to ponder this question for a couple of moments and perhaps talk about it with a friend.  
  3. After a few minutes, ask class members to share with the class some of their ideas.  As they do, write the ideas on the board.
  4. As the class members share these ideas, be prepared to make connections between what they say and Pres. Lund's counsel.  For example:
    1. Time immersed in the Spirit = par. 10 ("When you drop . . . be new creatures")
    2. Community = par. 13 ("Thankfully, they do . . . grand and majestic"-- could also be follow the prophet) or par. 6 ("For some of . . . on higher ground")
    3. Scripture study = par. 5 ("We must continue . . . and serving sincerely")

Using the Activity:

This is a very straightforward activity using a question straight from the talk.  However, it does two things of note.  First, it honors the fact that the members of our class are coming in with a solid body of gospel knowledge and experience living the gospel.  These things mean that they know many ways to answer these questions.  Second, this activity demands that the teacher be very familiar with the talk.  Obviously, you do not need to be able to find a quote in a split second, but being familiar with the talk will allow you to remind people of various points that Pres. Lund makes and to point out some of them.

Bishop W. Christopher Waddell (Oct. '23): "More Than a Hero"

 This talk is custom made for today.  All around us we can see people who choose worldly heroes to focus on and follow with little, if any, thought given to Christ and Father.  The results are perilous to us and to society.  This talk in some aspects reminds me of some of Pres. Kimball's teachings ( here , for example).   The Activity: Draw a line down the middle of the board. Read par. 23 "For us on . . . Savior and Redeemer." Ask the class members to consider what would characterize too much trust placed in "the politician, the musician, the athlete, or the vlogger" or anyone. Invite them to share their ideas.  As they do, list them on one side of the board. Invite the class members to look over the list they have created and consider how they can either safeguard against these things or walk back from perilous positions. Elder David A. Bednar (Apr. '23): "Abide in Me, and I in You; Therefore, Walk with Me"

 I have mentioned in other places in this blog that I am a newly called Elders Quorum president.  As such, this talk really struck home.  I feel woefully inadequate in fulfilling my calling.  This talk gave me comfort and confidence in moving forward.   The Activity: Explain Enoch's reaction to his calling and share your own experience with receiving a calling that overwhelmed you at first and/or invite some class members to share their experiences like this. Invite the class members to read paragraph 5 ("And the Lord . . . give thee utterance'") silently and ask them to identify 1) what God asks of Enoch and 2) what God promises Enoch.   Allow class members a moment to read the passage. Come back and discuss as a class what they found. Ask them to think about how these same commands and promises could apply to various callings (including those they currently have and/or those talked about at the beginning).
