Elder Quentin L. Cook (Oct. '23): "Be Peaceable Followers of Christ"

I find this talk wonderfully applicable in our times.  Many are allowing themselves to be led astray because they do not know/do not have testimonies of the truths in this talk.  I know the path is hard, but understanding that fact ahead of time, knowing the doctrines, and remembering the helps we have as we make our way are vital to making it through.

The Activity:

  1. Ahead of time prepare slips of papers with the following quotes on them.  There should be enough slips for each class member to have their own.
    1. Par. 10-13 "In 1829 the . . . of eternal salvation."
    2. Par. 15 "For those of . . . countries and individuals."
    3. Par. 18-22 "The Lord in . . . Savior and Redeemer."
    4. Par. 24-25 "In His atoning . . . of Jesus Christ."
    5. Par. 26 "Our Father's plan . . . perspective and understanding."
    6. Par. 28-29 "Many do not . . . of never-ending happiness."
    7. Par. 30 "We recognize that . . . of the prophets."
  2. With the class, read par. 17 "We do not . . . each of us."
  3. Give each class member one of the prepared slips.
  4. Ask them to read their quote and consider how it represents "important principles" that help us face adversity (Par. 17).
  5. After allowing the class members a few moments to consider their passage, invite them to get up and find someone not sitting near them to share their quote and thoughts with.  During this sharing each class member should share and try to connect the principles discussed.  If a both members of a partnership have the same quote that is okay.
  6. Repeat this sharing a few times.
  7. Come back together as a class and ask the class members to share some of the more impactful things that they heard and felt.

Using the Activity:

This activity is designed to help the class members focus on a single passage of Elder Cook's talk and to ponder its applicability in their lives.  By allowing some time to think and then asking the class members to share what they considered, we are helping them to invite revelation in their own lives.  This activity also serves to center the class members' thoughts and impressions in the class, which is one way to help create a "home-centered, church-supported" gospel learning experience.
