Sis. Sharon Eubank (Oct. '21): "I Pray He'll Use Us"

One of two talks from this conference that highlight the impressive humanitarian work done by the Church.  I especially liked Sis. Eubank's talk because of the focus on the personal impacts these efforts have made for so many people throughout the world.  These stories are powerful reminders not only of what the Church as a whole can do, but also of what we can do through our own small efforts.  Hence, this activity.

The Activity:

  1. Read par. 27-28 "Speaking of the . . . I; send me.'"
  2. Point out that 1) there is much work to do and 2) there is great need close to where we each live.
  3. Talk about what these two point make class members feel and think about.
  4. Read par. 5-12 (bulleted list) "The Church responds . . . with service opportunities."
  5. Discuss how these activities carried out locally can impact the lives of those in need and help us to fulfill the Church's mandate to care for the poor (par. 4).
  6. After a few moments, ask class members to consider how they might take steps to better care for those around them.
  7. Have them identify one thing they can do to help fulfill this mission and to record it somewhere (phone, piece of paper, etc.) and arrange with someone sitting near them to follow up with.  They do not need to share exactly what they will do; instead, the idea is to simply have some accountability to say that they did accomplish their goal.

Using the Activity:

I envision this activity coming at or near the end of the lesson, but inspiration may lead you another direction.  The main impetus of this activity is to help class members set and achieve goals that directly apply this talk to their lives.  By building in extra accountability in the form of someone else to report to this activity increases the likelihood of these goals being carried out.  Having said that, some people may not feel comfortable reporting to someone else (or having someone else report to them).  Of course, these people should not be forced to participate.

Thank you for visiting my blog.  I pray that you find it a useful resource for you.  God bless.
